ATW Health Solutions Recognized for PCORI Engagement Award Project on Patient-Centered Stroke Research
Building on PCORI-funded research on stroke awareness, two PCORI Engagement Award projects highlighted the significance of community voices in this work. Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke, which equates to more than 795,000 people per year. Of those affected, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that African American adults are 50 percent more likely to have a stroke and 70 percent more likely to die from a stroke compared to their non-Hispanic, White counterparts. This reality sparked community efforts to increase awareness of stroke prevention within parts of Chicago.

ATW Project Lead to Legislation on Promoting Stroke Awareness
This bill requires the Department of Public Health to partner with Governors State University to establish a six-month outreach and educational campaign focused on promoting stroke awareness within Chicago’s Southland community, stroke recognition and prevention strategies, and access to reliable sources of information about strokes.
